This was a fun item to make! It is beginner friendly and you will have a completely finished project in minutes.
There are so many things to love about this tutorial.
Secret Yarnery breaks down with time stamps making it easier to go back or move forward at your pace. I love these as sometimes I am impatient and need to go back and actually listen to the directions or want to move forward to just catch the end again.
There are links to a written pattern and two other tutorials depending on whether you are right or left handed.
Presentation and voice is easy to follow and straight to the point.
Indicates instructions with a gold needle - this is a tutorial technique that is really helpful when you aren’t working with someone in a classroom setting. It is sometimes very difficult to really see where a crocheter is placing their hook with the movement of the project. Taking the extra time to really point out and count down the loops makes a huge difference and less trial and error.
Whether you are new or advanced this is a great tutorial and product to make. You can whip through several in an afternoon and have a whole pile of gifts at the ready.
I look at crochet patterns much like I do with recipes and make it by “the book” the first time around and then make my own personal adjustments to suit my taste.
Adjustments:
Instead of just making chains for the handles, I made foundation single crochets (fsc).
I like the looks of this better and it feels more sturdy.
The original pattern was too small for my larger mugs, so I measured out the length of the handle and made the foundation chain that long (however I only did the fsc’s for the length of the handle and then went back to chaining for the circumference of the mug).
I also added chains to the circumference to make it longer, just make sure you are adding by 4’s.
You can see the size difference between the original patterns and mine, that is just personal preference.
